The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) has won national recognition for its achievements in water conservation and reclamation. With decades of expertise in saving water for local residents, the SFPUC could not make water conservation any easier. In keeping with this commitment to efficiency, the SFPUC offers a variety of programs and incentives to help residents meet the requirements of the City’s Residential Water Conservation Ordinance. Why not help San Francisco save water while simultaneously cutting your utility bills? In addition, if you’re about to remodel or sell your home — note that compliance with the ordinance is verified at the time of sale — you may want to take these offerings into account:
- First, residents of San Francisco are eligible for a free in-home assessment of their water use, a diagnostic survey that identifies leaks and other areas of waste, while pointing out strategies and improvements for saving water. For more information, see the Water-Wise House Call Web page. To schedule a visit from an SFPUC technician, call the SFPUC’s Water Conservation Section at (415) 551-4730.
- San Franciscans can also receive a rebate of up to $200 dollars if they purchase certified “High-Efficiency” washing machines for their home. These machines use less detergent, water and energy but actually clean clothes more effectively! In fact, these models can be up to 40% more efficient than conventional washers. See the Residential Clothes Washer Rebates program information page for rules and an application or call the SFPUC’s Water Conservation Section at (415) 551-4730. “High-Efficiency” machines are also eligible for a PG&E energy conservation rebate, but the two offers cannot be applied to the same item. See our Energy Conservation article for details on PG&E's rebate programs.
