According to the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC), the agency responsible for monitoring the City’s water quality, San Francisco’s drinking water meets both state and federal public health standards. In fact, water from Hetch Hetchy, SFPUC’s principal reservoir, is now available bottled, just like Evian and Poland Spring! However, you should note the following, in case you have any questions or concerns about your water quality:
- To receive information on the drinking water for your particular neighborhood, call the Water Quality Bureau of the SFPUC at (650) 872-5950.
- To report strange tastes or odors coming from tap water, call the aptly named Water Taste and Odor Hotline at (877) 737-8297, Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. After hours or on holidays, call (650) 872-5900. You may also call the toll-free 877 number if your water does not run clear more than one hour after the SPUC has flushed municipal pipelines.
- To receive municipal water advisories after an emergency –– such as an earthquakes or floods –– that can make tap water unsafe, call the SFPUC at (877) 737-8297.
- Lead in drinking water can also be a hazard, especially for children and pregnant women. On rare occasions, lead has been detected in the tap water of certain areas of the City. High lead levels can also leach from the pipes and fixtures in your home.
To have your water tested for lead, call (877) 737-8297. The fee is $25.00 but San Francisco’s Childhood Lead Prevention Program (CLPP) offers free analysis to certain households. Call (877)-SFP-UCWQ (877-737-8297) for details.
- As part of its water quality improvement efforts, the SFPUC also offers lead-free faucets to San Francisco property owners for only $10.00. Applications and further details are available online.
