- Backflow (cross connection), the intermingling of a contaminant — e.g., sewage or pesticides — and drinking water, poses another threat of which you should be aware. Contamination occurs when toxic material “backflows” to the drinking water supply through an unprotected connection. This often occurs as a result of crises such as flooding or water main breaks. If drains and water fixtures in your home sit lower than sidewalk sewer vents, you may need backflow prevention valves. To speak with a plumbing inspector, call the SFPUC at (415) 558-6054.
The SFPUC Web site provides much more information on cross connection problems and prevention, as well as Water Quality Fact Sheets and the agency's annual Water Quality Report. You’ll also find full details on the agency’s operations, resources and infrastructure.
