Gardens

San Francisco, renown for its abundance of outdoor space and temperate weather, boasts an array of beautiful public gardens. Like some residents, you may also maintain a plot of your own. Whether a cultivator or a mere appreciator, you'll find a host of resources on gardens and gardening in the Bay Area:

  • Before spraying for bugs,  read about Less Toxic Control for Garden Pests & Disease when you visit the the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) online. You'll find out how to use preventive measures, such as the application of horticultural oils and sticky pastes, to combat earwigs, cutworms, and cabbage loopers. The SFPUC also offers a free "vibrant and educational" San Francisco Gardener Calendar. Use this to "learn how to maintain a healthy garden with non-toxic, integrated pest management (IPM) techniques. The SF Gardener also highlights fun and informative gardening-related events that take place throughout the year." Be sure to check out details on the annual SF Gardener Calendar Photo Contest, too.

  • Don't overlook the Friends of the Urban Forest (FUF) Web site, a must-see if you are interested in adding trees to your property. The FUF provides a wealth of comprehensive tree-care knowledge, including details on soil, pruning, tree and sidewalk issues. If planting a tree, you may also call the City's Tool Lending Center at (415) 701-8665 to get the necessary equipment.

Bear in mind that you must contact the DPW's Bureau of Urban Forestry at (415) 554-6700 to obtain a permit prior to adding or removing any street trees. If your tree looks sick or has suffered damaged, call the FUF's tree emergency line at (415) 561-6890, extension 403, to see if it might be saved instead of removed.
