Residential Energy Conservation Ordinance (RECO)

  • If you are undertaking a home renovation project valued at $20,000 or more, you will also have to verify that the modifications comply with RECO requirements. Minor alterations to your home do not call for compliance, but more significant renovations, depending on the type of work and its dollar value, will likely be subject to RECO regulations.

For further details call the DBI’s Housing Inspection Services (HIS) at (415) 558-6220 or the California Energy Commission at 1-800-772-3300. Also be sure to download and read the DBI’s booklet What You Should Know About the Residential Energy Conservation Ordinance (RECO). As it suggests, why not make required energy-saving modifications to your home right now? You’ll be able to undertake these projects at your leisure — perhaps even do them yourself — and reap the benefits of immediate savings.
