Residential Water Conservation Ordinance

So how does the City verify that you are in compliance with the law? When selling your home, you or your broker must arrange for an official water conservation inspection. At that time, you must remedy any shortcomings in your home’s water conservation measures. Compliance with these requirements is to be met concurrently with those of the Residential Energy Conservation Ordinance (RECO) but water conservation compliance costs are not included in the maximum amount set for RECO.

You may file an affidavit provided by the S.F. Water Department stating that you have installed all water conservation devices required by the RECO or that you are eligible for an exemption. Buildings with no record of compliance are charged higher water rates. See our Water & Sewer Service  article for information about your SFPUC bill. You may also call the Water Department at (415) 551-3000 for further information.
