Special assessments are additional taxes used to pay for certain public works projects such as sidewalk or sewer system upgrades. These taxes are levied against the particular properties that stand to benefit from the improvements. Together, these properties form an assessment district. Any special assessments levied against your property will appear itemized on your tax bill. For more information, look at the part of your bill labeled “Direct Charges and/or Special Assessments,” which will list the code, agency name, and phone number relating to any additional taxes that appear. You can then contact that particular city agency for further details.
The Web site of the City and County of San Francisco, Office of the Treasurer & Tax Collector also offers comprehensive information in its “Property Zone” section. Here, you can find a number of useful resources for homeowners including a “Property Tax Calendar” and detailed information on “How to Read Your Property Tax Bill.” You may also view and pay your property tax online at the Property Tax Information & Payment section of the site.
