Flooding

    • Avoid any downed power lines and immediately contact PG&E at (800) 743-5000 so that they can address the hazard.

    • Report downed trees and clogged sewer drains to the Department of Public Works (DPW) at 311. (But 911 is always the number to call for help in life-threatening emergencies.)

    • If the flooding looks serious, listen to KCBS 740 AM; it can provide you with official instructions and reports on the emergency situation.

    • Remember to unplug all appliances if you need to evacuate your home. Do not disconnect gas and electric service unless you are directed to do so by officials or are aware of an immediate danger. If you have cut off your service, call PG&E at (800) 743-5000 after the storm to have the connection restored. Be aware that this procedure may take a few days, as PG&E will likely be busy restoring power to hundreds or thousands of other homes. Electric and gas utilities must be turned back on by PG&E if you shut off service at the fuse panel or gas meter — never attempt to turn gas service back on yourself.

    • After the flood, remaining water should be pumped out and the affected area should be dried completely. Do this as soon as possible or at least within 48 hours in order to prevent the growth of mold. Make sure to disinfect all surfaces — walls, floors, counters — and any items that have come into contact with floodwater.
