San Francisco is a politically-active city, so you should make sure you're registered to vote. You qualify if you meet the following conditions:
- You are a U.S. citizen;
- You are a resident of San Francisco;
- You will be least 18 years old before the next election;
- You have not been convicted of a felony for which you are in prison or on parole; and
- You have not been judged by a court to be mentally incompetent to register and to vote.
Assuming you meet the above requirements, including mental competence, registering is simple. Just pick up a Voter Registration Card at one of the following locations:
- The San Francisco Department of Elections, City Hall, 1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place, Room 48, (415) 554-4375, as well as other municipal government offices; alternatively, call Voter Services at (415) 554-4411 or email them at sfvote@sfgov.org to request a card be mailed to you;
- The Department of Motor Vehicles, 1377 Fell Street; (800) 777-0133;
- Your local U.S. Post Office –– see our Post Office Locations article;
- Your nearby San Francisco public library –– see our Libraries article; and
- The Web site for the California Secretary of State.
(Note that "registering online" only offers the convenience of not having to pick up a Voter Registration Card. After you complete the form online, you will receive an actual Voter Registration Card on which your information will be pre-printed. You will still need to sign and date the card and mail it to the Department of Elections.)
