If you suspect a zoning violation in your area, you can call one of the following San Francisco agencies:
- To report zoning violations concerning occupancy use, call the Department of Building Inspection's General Building Inspection division (GBI) at (415) 558-6088.
- To file a complaint concerning illegal construction in progress, call the GBI first to obtain a case number. Then call the Department of Building Inspection at (415) 558-6096. You will be directed to the building inspector for your district. Inspectors have limited office hours; if you leave a voice mail message include an address and description of the alleged violation. You may also confidentially leave your own name and number for a follow-up call.
- To complain about completed illegal construction, call the Department of Housing Inspection (DHI) at (415) 558-6220. You will be given a case number and directed to the Housing Inspector in charge of your district. Housing Inspectors are also in their offices only during limited hours. If you reach a voice mail, leave a clear message stating the address and description of the alleged violation. You should also leave your name and number for a follow-up call.
