Despite speeding cars and steep hills, San Francisco ranks as one of the nation's most bicycle-friendly cities. Though traffic hazards remain an issue, this top status reflects the continual effort of municipal government and non-profit organizations to improve conditions for bicyclists. In fact, the City of San Francisco supports both a public Bicycle Program and a Bicycle Advisory Committee, while the area is host to a multitude of advocacy groups.
Biking is good for you, easy on the environment — and perhaps even a boost to your property value, as "bikeable" communities are generally healthier, more attractive places to live. So forget the hassles and costs of parking, then take a look at the following:
- Bicycling 511 calls itself the "Bay Area's resource for bicycling information." This Web site offers a variety of practical features, such as the "511 BikeMapper Tool" for identifying "recommended roadways and paths in your community," and "Bike Buddy Matching" for linking up with fellow riders. You'll also find various classes, details about taking bikes on public transportation and tips on commuting by bicycle.
- The California Bicycle Coalition (CBC) "is a non-profit education and lobbying organization working to improve bicycling conditions throughout the State of California. CBC advocates for increased bicycle use, access, safety and education, by promoting the bicycle as an everyday means of transportation and recreation." Visit CBC online or call (916) 446-7558 for membership information.
- The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition (SFBC), the local chapter of CBC, carries a mission "to transform San Francisco's streets and neighborhoods into more livable and safe places by promoting the bicycle for everyday transportation." SFBC's Web site offers a great "Biking Resources" page, information on upcoming events, and details on the organization's top priority: the creation of a citywide bicycle network. Find out how to participate in your own district: contact the SFBC at 995 Market Street, Suite 1550, SF, CA 94103; phone 415-431-BIKE; fax 415-431-2468; email info@sfbike.org.
