Driving and Commuting by Car

  • The Department of Parking & Traffic makes online information available regarding city street construction, such as street paving and utility excavation, including detour maps for the Third Street Light Rail Connection and Fell Street Off-Ramp projects.

  • If your commute involves one of the Bay Area's toll bridges, get FasTrak and your payment will be automatically deducted from your account. Using a transponder attached to your windshield, you can pass through designated lanes for FasTrak users, bypassing cars waiting in line to pay. You can apply online or download an application directly from the FasTrak Web site.

  • SFgov is San Francisco's "new Integrated Transportation Management System led by the Department of Parking and Traffic (DPT). Phases of the project will be implemented over the next several years... Travelers can expect signals that respond to the actual volume of traffic on a roadway, faster response by City personnel clearing an incident, real-time information on travel conditions and improved coordination between all modes of transportation." Visit Sfgov's Web site to keep yourself updated on the stages of the project's rollout.

  • Finally, you might also consider simply leaving your car at home. Public transportation generally offers a reliable option for rush-hour journeys. Also, if you don't live too far from your job, you always have the choice of bicycling or walking. So why not give one of these alternatives a try? You might be pleasantly surprised — especially by the amount of money you'll save on gas and parking. Take a look at 511 Transit's Commute Calculator to see how much you really spend on your commute.
