Livable Streets Initiative

  • The School Area Safety Program works to tame the disorder of traffic around schools. This effort includes upgrading nearby crosswalks and signs, educating parents about the hazards of congestion during pickup and drop-off times, and coordinating with the Adult School Crossing Guards Program, Community Parking Officers and the PTA in finding solutions to dangerous traffic situations. For more information, including safety tips for parents and details on the Safe Routes to School program, visit the DPT’s School Area Safety Web page. You may also call the Program Manager, Britt Thesen, or Eileen Ross, Bike & Pedestrian Safety Outreach Coordinator, at (415) 701-4500.

  • The Red Light Photo Enforcement program monitors intersections through automated traffic enforcement systems. These systems are equipped with cameras that catch red-light runners on film. The DPT then cites culprits via mail. According to the DPT, red-light running at monitored intersections dropped by 40% within six months of the program’s inception, and over 60,000 violators have been cited. The DPT plans to substantially increase the program. See the Red Light Photo Enforcement page for further background on the project, as well as site-selection criteria and a list of intersections currently equipped for monitoring.
