School Safety

  • The School Area Safety Program, a component of the SFMTA's Livable Streets initiative, addresses the hazards of traffic around schools. This effort includes upgrading nearby crosswalks and signs, educating parents about the problems posed by congestion during pickup and drop-off times, and coordinating with the Adult School Crossing Guards Program, Community Parking Officers and the PTA in finding solutions to risky traffic situations. For more information, including safety tips for parents and details on the Safe Routes to Schools program, visit the SFMTA’s School Area Safety Program Web site. You may also call Program Manager Britt Thesen or Bike and Pedestrian Safety Outreach Coordinator Eileen Ross at (415) 554-2398.

  • The National Center for Bicycling & Walking (NCBW) “works with local, state, and national bicycle, pedestrian and transportation advocates to bring about changes in government policies, programs and procedures.” Visit the NCBW’s Web site to learn more about their goals and objectives for schools in bicycle-friendly, walkable communities. The site also provides comprehensive information on the Safe Routes to School program including tools, contacts and funding resources.
